The Municipal health directorate is an institution under Ghana Health Service/MOH that is mandated to provide and prudently manage comprehensive and accessible health service with special emphasis on primary health care at all levels of the district healthcare system in accordance with approved national policies. Background Information of the municipal
Ayawaso Central Municipal is located on Longitude 05°35’N and on Latitude 00°06’W. The Assembly shares boundary with Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly to the North, Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly to the South, Accra Metropolitan Assembly and Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly to the West and Ayawaso North and Ayawaso East to the East. The total land size of Ayawaso Central Municipal Assembly 6 kilometers square (1459 acres). The Municipal capital of the Assembly is Kokomlemle. The Municipal is divided into three administrative sub-municipals as follows: Accra Newtown sub-municipal, Kotobabi sub-municipal and Alajo sub-municipal. The municipal has an estimated population of 106,881 (2025 estimate) people with an annual growth rate of 4.2% from the 2021 PHC, due partly to influx of people from other parts of the country.
Health Service Delivery
The Municipal has one main government clinic- Mallam Atta Government Clinic. This is located at the Mallam Atta Market (Mallam Atta). There are nine private health facilities, one CHAG clinic and one Maternity home reporting to the Directorate. The Municipal can also boost of seventeen (16) functional CHPS zones and nineteen outreach points where health promotion, reproductive and child health services and Nutrition are carried out in the municipality. The most popular NGO in the municipality is the Marie Stopes which offers sexual and reproductive healthcare services including post-abortion care, STI Testing and Contraceptives.
Most referrals are sent to Maamobi Governmental Hospital at the Ayawaso North Municipal and the 37 Military Hospital at the Ayawaso East Municipal.
